Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence that the war with Russia could end sooner under Donald Trump’s policies if he assumes office in the United States.
Speaking in an interview, Zelensky described his recent phone conversation with Trump as “constructive,” but did not detail any specific demands Trump may have made regarding negotiations with Russia.
Trump has long promised to end the conflict quickly, though his exact strategy remains unclear. Thr U.S. has been a major source of military aid to Ukraine, contributing over $55 billion in weapons and equipment. However, domestic support for continued aid, particularly among Republican voters, has waned.
Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to seeking a diplomatic solution to the war, which has seen limited progress since Ukraine’s counter-offensive stalled in 2023.
Despite ongoing territorial struggles, including recent Russian advances in the east, Zelensky remains firm on not conceding any Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which Russia has occupied since 2014.
The renewed diplomatic focus comes amid growing concerns over the war’s fatigue both in Ukraine and internationally.
While Trump’s stance has been met with mixed reactions, some fear his approach could be a de facto surrender for Ukraine, threatening broader European stability.
Meanwhile, European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have noted that Trump’s views on the war may be more nuanced than previously thought.
