The United Nations has demanded a “full investigation” into the death of Aysenur Eygi, a 26-year-old American volunteer who was killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on September 6, 2024. Eygi, a member of the International Solidarity Movement and a recent University of Washington graduate, was participating in a protest against Jewish settlement expansion in Beita when she was shot in the head.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasized that “civilians should be protected at all times” and called for accountability. The White House has expressed deep concern and requested additional information from Israeli officials, while Eygi’s family has called for an independent investigation, rejecting the adequacy of an Israeli probe.
Eyewitnesses, including local residents and activists, reported seeing Israeli military vehicles at the scene, with conflicting accounts about the circumstances of the shooting. The Israel Defense Forces have stated they are reviewing the incident, noting that their forces responded to what they described as a violent threat.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, currently on a trip to the Caribbean, offered condolences and assured that the U.S. government is focused on obtaining details about the tragic event.
