In a press briefing held on September 4, 2024, the Department of State alleged Russia of using covert means to influence U.S. elections. The press briefing further alleges the RT (formerly Russia Today) of paying unwitting Americans to spread Kremlin propaganda.
In response, the U.S. Department of State is (a) restricting visas for individuals associated with Kremlin media involved in covert activities, (b) designating Russian media entities like Rossiya Segodnya and its subsidiaries as foreign missions, requiring them to disclose personnel and property, and (c) offering rewards for information on foreign interference in U.S. elections, including from the hacker group RaHDit (Russian Angry Hackers Did It).
