The Wall Street Journal, on September 6, 2024, reported that Iran has sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia, based on information from unnamed U.S. and European officials. The specific type and quantity of the missiles were not disclosed. Earlier in August, Reuters had reported that Russia might receive hundreds of Fath-360 and other short-range ballistic missiles from Iran.

Iran and Russia, close allies, have strengthened their military and political ties since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Iran has previously supplied Russia with thousands of Shahed kamikaze drones and, according to reports, a large number of powerful surface-to-surface ballistic missiles. Despite these supplies, there have been no confirmed reports of Iranian missiles being used by Russia in Ukraine.

The G7 countries are expected to condemn these missile deliveries and raise their concerns through diplomatic channels. Additionally, Iranian sources have suggested that Iran is seeking modern air defense systems from Russia amid tensions with Israel, with some deliveries reportedly underway. Meanwhile, North Korean artillery shells and missiles have also been confirmed in use by Russian forces.
