In a press briefing held on September 4, 2024, the Department of State’s spokesperson Matthew Miller has made accusations about new Russian efforts to undermine the United States’ democracy.

Miller further mentioned that the Department of Justice revealed that RT (formerly Russia Today) is now using covert means to influence U.S. elections by paying unwitting Americans to spread Kremlin propaganda. In response, the U.S. Department of State is taking three actions:

  • Restricting visas for individuals associated with Kremlin media involved in covert activities.
  • Designating Russian media entities like Rossiya Segodnya and its subsidiaries as foreign missions, requiring them to disclose personnel and property.
  • Offering rewards for information on foreign interference in U.S. elections, including from the hacker group RaHDit (Russian Angry Hackers Did It).

These steps are part of broader law enforcement and sanction efforts by the U.S. government.
